Those dark work loafers on the small shelf in Paul Sweetow’s karate studio nod to the other career honed under this fifth-degree black belt.
In his bare feet and bare hands, Sweetow is the sensei in his dojo, meaning “place of the way,” at the 896 Green Bay Road storefront location at North Shore Karate Center.
The a licensed clinical social worker also maintains a psychotherapy practice at 1050 Gage St. across from Hubbard Woods Park. Sweetow, of Buffalo Grove, studied karate since he was 15, and won a gold medal June 29 in the Cincinnati, Ohio Amateur Athletic Union National Karate Tournament. His gold medal recognized Sweetow’s Kata skills for expert form.
He learned Japanese at Middlebury College and traveled to Japan to study karate for a year with Okinawan masters. He has also served as a mental health consultant to North Shore Country Day School in Winnetka.
